Backup Strategy

If you are serious about safeguarding your valuable data you would be advised to adopt a strategy that best suits your style of business.

The business world of today is faced with the extremely fast growing volume of digital information. Companies, regardless of their size, cannot afford to be without a data storage solution. Some companies due to the constant volume of data  backup hourly, daily, weekly and monthly so as they can back-track to a certain point and restore their data from there.

We are talking Tape backup. Tape still remains the most popular choice, it's cheaper and it's reliable. Tape offers the best protection of your data for the following reasons:

  • Higher storage capacities.
  • Offers lowest cost per GB.
  • Media is interchangeable.
  • Mirrored disks offer no protection against viruses etc.
  • Data stored on tape has a long shelf life (30 years)

The following method demonstrates 'Storage Requirements' in a 'Backup Strategy'.

Backup Strategy Example:
Number of tapes required: 19 (minimum)

In this method, four (4) tapes are used Monday through Thursday (one for each day - full backups);
another three (3) tapes are used every
Friday (one for each Friday of the month - full backups).

The remaining twelve (12) tapes are used for Monthly full backups and are kept off-site. (An offsite store needs to be part of your strategy because of fire).

This method is recommended because it offers a good tape number to storage life ratio (19 tapes / 1 year).
